    Alicia Nixon’s work with Accenture Canada is an excellent example of how businesses can cut costs while becoming more sustainable. By conducting an energy audit and following up with facility representatives, one of Accenture’s GTA sites was able to reduce their energy consumption by 36 000 kWh. That’s an incredible 14% reduction in energy consumption over the course of a year!

    In the Market for Change: Green4Good helps Companies Reduce Waste

    As new waves of technology are being released increasingly rapidly, disposing of obsolete e-waste has become a major issue. Green4Good is a company that specializes in the reuse and recycling of old computers, phones and gadgets that are otherwise unfit for landfills. Last year Green4Good managed to divert over 45 000 items from landfills and saved their clients over 1 million in disposal costs.

    Many small and medium-sized business want to do more, but lack the resources and capacity to measure its footprint and implement more environmentally-responsible ways of doing business. By joining the Living Planet @ Work program, GTA-based company Miratel, was able to gain the resources it needed to publish its first sustainability report. Miratel is now moving ahead, assuring others that understanding what you’re doing is the key to doing more.

    After a short hiatus, Bullfrog Power's sustainability committee decided to reinvigorate its office green initiatives by signing up to Living Planet @ Work. Part of their plan this summer was hosting a "zero waste month" that involved a waste audit, a printing reduction challenge and awarding a green MVP each week.     By partnering with the WWF and the Living Planet @ Work program, RSA has challenged its 23,000 employees to submit green solutions for a more sustainable business. The winners of the contest will join RSA CEOs and WWF scientists as they observe the detrimental consequences of deforestation in the Amazon. By empowering their employees RSA has enhanced collaboration, reduced their environmental footprint and has saved thousands of dollars by implementing solutions submitted in the contest.

    Emissions resulting from transportation can be a difficult issue when you work in a country as large as Canada. Businesses have already caught on – and many are already reducing their costs by downsizing their fleets, purchasing more efficient vehicles and switching to alternative meeting methods rather than travelling long distances to meet in person. These measures don’t just reduce a businesses cost, but can have a significant impact on their emissions as well!
